With hundreds of cases of swine flu reported in Mexico, and dozens more appearing in the U.S., anti-immigrant hard-liners wasted no time blaming their one-size-fits-all bogeyman for the disease.
They took to the airwaves and scribbled hastily on their blogs about how America's supposed "open-door policy" towards migrants from Mexico was the cause of the outbreak's appearance on this side of the Rio Grande.

After all the money and other kinds of help that has been given to banks or extorted from the public, banks still aren't lending enough to make a difference in this troubled economy.
The

that the biggest financial institutions "made or refinanced a total of $226.3 billion of loans in October. In February that figure had fallen to $174.2 billion." The only three outfits to make more "loans in February than October were BB&T Corp., a regional bank based in Winston-Salem, N.C.; Wall Street giant Morgan Stanley; and State Street Corp., a Boston-based company that provides financial services mainly to institutions and wealthy individuals."
You would think that since the banks can borrow money from the government at close to zero-percent interest and lend it at 4 percent to 5 percent, they would be shoving dough out the door into the hands of any vaguely solvent looking passerby, but they're not.

Wang Songlian, the research director of China Human Rights Defenders, told Al Jazeera that some facilities in Beijing functioned as centralised black jails and were used to house petitioners caught by Beijing police.
“Officials or staff in these centralised black jails would register the petitioners and then send them to the appropriate black jails organised by local authorities,” she said.
“So this is actually quite an organised and systematic system in which petitioners are sent from one black jail to another in order to punish them for bringing their complaints.”

There is a danger that large member states are about to "back out of the EU", Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Balázs told EurActiv Hungary in an interview. Balázs took office on 14 April as a member of new Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai's cabinet.
Balázs, who is a former EU commissioner, said that large member states were looking to "strengthen" the role of other institutions as alternative decision-making fora.
The foreign minister said Germany had been working "to seize economic institutions and to strengthen the G20" since 2007.
In line with views recently expressed by Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht (EurActiv 21/04/09), he argued that the aim of such actions was to leave smaller EU member states "behind", with larger members preferring to deal with states that have "similar influence and weight".
According to Balázs, for big member states, the problem with the EU is that its small members get a disproportionate opportunity to speak and influence the debate, "with no regard for their size". "Therefore Malta has an equal chance to speak as Germany," noted the Hungarian.

PORT OF SPAIN — President Barack Obama defended on Sunday his amicable first encounter with Venezuelan leader and anti-US firebrand Hugo Chavez, which critics back home assailed as naiive and "irresponsible".
"It's unlikely that as a consequence of me shaking hands or having a polite conversation with Mr. Chavez that we are endangering the strategic interest of the United States," Obama told reporters at the close of a Summit of the Americas.
But, he stressed he still had concerns about Venezuela and Chavez's often heated rhetoric.
"I have great differences with Hugo Chavez on matters of economic policy and matters of foreign policy," Obama said.
"There have been instances in which we've seen Venezuela interfere with some of the countries that surround Venezuela in ways that I think are a source of concern," he added.
Obama and Chavez met here Friday at the opening of a 34-nation Americas summit and photos of the encounter showed the US leader smiling as he shook the Venezuelan's hand and patted him on the shoulder.

Fortune's closely watched list, released Sunday, ranked companies by their revenue in 2008. Irving, Texas-based Exxon took in $442.85 billion in revenue last year, up almost 19 percent from 2007. The company also raked in the biggest annual profit, earning $45.2 billion.
Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart had held the top spot for six of the last seven years but fell to No. 2 this year. Still, the retail giant's 2008 revenue climbed 7 percent to $405.6 billion, as the battered economy sent more consumers searching for bargains. The world's largest retailer took in $13.4 billion in annual profit, an increase of about 5 percent.
Although it may have been a good year for Exxon and Wal-Mart, 2008 was far from rosy for most of remaining companies on the list. Overall earnings plunged 85 percent to $98.9 billion from $645 billion in 2007, the biggest one-year decline in the 55-year history of the Fortune 500 list.

Most of the drug shipments smuggled into the United States by the Mexican cartels are hidden in trucks that drive across U.S. border checkpoints in plain sight, with little fear of inspection, U.S. law enforcement officials tell ABC News.
Only about 5 percent of trucks coming into the country from Mexico are inspected, according to U.S. officials.
"It is just too costly and too slow given the volume of trucks to actually try to stop and inspect each and every truck," said Juan Zarate who dealt with the issue in the Geroge W. Bush White House as Deputy National Security Director.
The number of trucks coming into the U.S. has steadily increased since the passage of NAFTA in 1993. Almost 3,000,000 loaded container trailers crossed at border checkpoints last year.
"It does open up the potential for drug networks to take advantage, but I think it is something we have to find alternative ways of addressing," said Zarate.

G20 cop who hit Ian Tomlinson 'has a heart attack'
THE policeman filmed hitting a newspaper seller just before he died at the G20 protests has had a suspected heart attack.
The officer, who has not been named, claims he did not realise he was the man who pushed Ian Tomlinson to the ground until he saw footage on Wednesday’s TV news. Badly shaken, he telephoned Scotland Yard chiefs to say he was the officer involved, then collapsed at his home.
The PC was taken to hospital in Sussex, where he was kept in overnight with a suspected heart attack but was released the next day.
The officer, who works for the Territorial Support Group who deal with riots and public order, was suspended on Thursday.
He faces a criminal investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) following Mr Tomlinson’s death.

Writers with two mainstream American newspapers took on the issue of marijuana today. And here's the shocker: both articles are outstanding.
In the San Francisco Chronicle, Bob Egelko explores the questions surrounding medical marijuana defendants charged under Bush-era policies that don't sync with the Obama administration's position on the matter.
The portion of his report I found most interesting was this bit about the Compassionate Cooperative of Alameda County, which was raided by the DEA in 2007 ...
The owners, brothers Winslow and Abraham Norton, had a county permit and had been paying taxes on their multimillion-dollar annual sales, their lawyers said.
The charges against them include drug distribution, money laundering and carrying guns during drug trafficking - firearms held by their licensed security guards, a charge that ratchets up the mandatory minimum sentence to 15 years.

support microchip implants, but this is over the top.
An upcoming "Chip-a-thon"(!?!) in Northern Pennsylvania will be
injecting pets with microchips -- to raise money for the American Cancer
Society!

These are the same microchips that cause cancer in 1% to 10% of
laboratory animals that receive them. Peer-reviewed journal articles
have shown to be related to cancerous tumors in at least two dogs.
This promotional puff piece contains no mention of cancer, the recent
death of Charlie Brown--the chihuahua that bled to death in January from
a chip implant, chip migration, chip failure, MRI incompatibility,
function creep, societal downsides, industry deception, religious
opposition -- nothing.
The Pocono Record should be ashamed at passing this off as balanced
journalism. We need to start calling journalists and editors on the
carpet whenever they print biased promotional pieces that support the
implant industry. They need to investigate and report the facts.
Microchip implants are dangerous, and should not be put into living
beings.
Could one of you (or many of you) write a letter to the editor about
this horrible article? At the very least we need some serious comments

Historians and advocates of government transparency have complained strongly about the Bush backlog, which Obama ended with an executive order signed the day after he took office that limits the review period to 30 days in most cases.
In a letter obtained by Politico, White House Counsel Gregory Craig informed the National Archives and Records Administration that President Obama "has not asserting executive privilege over any of this material," opening the way for their release.

April 10, 2009 "WSWS" -- The New York Times on Thursday published a front-page article that provides further insight into the economic and class interests that are being served by the Obama administration’s economic “recovery” policies.
Headlined “Small Investors May Be Enlisted in Bank Bailout,” the article outlines discussions between the administration and Wall Street investment firms on structuring the so-called “Public-Private Investment Program” announced last month in a manner that will allow people of modest means to invest in the scheme, whose purpose is to enable the banks to offload their toxic assets at public expense.
When the plan was announced March 23 by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, it sparked a wild rally on the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 497 points when it became clear that the government was offering to provide up to 95 percent of the capital, insure almost all potential losses and virtually guarantee large profits for hedge funds and other financial firms that agree to purchase the bad debts of the banks at inflated prices, with the taxpayers underwriting the windfall for Wall Street and assuming virtually all of the risk.

April 10, 2009 "WSWS" -- The New York Times on Thursday published a front-page article that provides further insight into the economic and class interests that are being served by the Obama administration’s economic “recovery” policies.
Headlined “Small Investors May Be Enlisted in Bank Bailout,” the article outlines discussions between the administration and Wall Street investment firms on structuring the so-called “Public-Private Investment Program” announced last month in a manner that will allow people of modest means to invest in the scheme, whose purpose is to enable the banks to offload their toxic assets at public expense.
When the plan was announced March 23 by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, it sparked a wild rally on the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 497 points when it became clear that the government was offering to provide up to 95 percent of the capital, insure almost all potential losses and virtually guarantee large profits for hedge funds and other financial firms that agree to purchase the bad debts of the banks at inflated prices, with the taxpayers underwriting the windfall for Wall Street and assuming virtually all of the risk.

The Force, it seems, is not so strong with this one.
In the virtual world of a game called Neuroboy, I'm staring out over a lagoon at an exact digital replica of a Star Wars X-wing spaceship submerged in blue water. My task: to lift that virtual object out of its murky depths using not my mouse or keyboard, but instead -- à la Luke Skywalker -- my thoughts.
Back in the real world, I'm wearing a bluetooth headset that touches my forehead with a single metal sensor. The more I relax, according to the headset's manufacturer, Neurosky, the more that small metal point will pick up my brain's alpha waves, triggering the ship to rise.
I relax. The spaceship doesn't budge. I close my eyes to slits and let myself slip into a half-trance daze. The ship wiggles ever so slightly, and I respond with a bit of hopeful excitement that immediately sends it sinking back into the water.
After a minute or so of frustration, I retreat to my keyboard to switch the game from "lift" to "pull" mode. Suddenly, and without a single Jedi mind trick, the X-wing leaps toward me and fills the entire screen, only coming to rest when I pull off the headset to break the sensor's connection with my forehead. Either my mental powers aren't yet ready for Neurosky's gadgetry, or vice versa.

As former Clintonite, CFR member, and Bilderberger Larry Summers was addressing the Economic Club in Washington D.C. on Thursday, two Code Pink demonstrators mounted the stage and unfurled a banner demanding Larry and the banksters give back the criminally acquired giveaway money. “Larry Summers is part of the problem,” screamed one of the activists. “He is a mess.” It took a minute or two for security to drag away the Code Pinkers. “Resign Larry, the people are asking you to give Obama a fair shot,” they demanded.
Give Obama a fair shot? Code Pink may not be aware of it, but the Obama administration is packed like a sardine can with CFR members, former hacks from the Federal Reserve, and assorted bankster minions. If Obama gets rid of Larry Summers — and rest assured he will not — he would merely replace him with another CFR member or Bilderberger. Code Pink seems to be oblivious to the fact Obama is a front man for the global elite. Obama is a marionette reading from a prepared script projected on teleprompter screens.

White House Denies Obama Bowed To King Abdullah
The White House is denying that the president bowed to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia at a G-20 meeting in London, a scene that drew criticism on the right and praise from some Arab outlets.
“It wasn’t a bow. He grasped his hand with two hands, and he’s taller than King Abdullah,” said an Obama aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The Washington Times called the alleged bow a “shocking display of fealty to a foreign potentate” and said it violated centuries of American tradition of not deferring to royalty. The Weekly Standard, meanwhile, noted that American protocol apparently rules out bowing, or at least it reportedly did on the occasion of a Clinton “near-bow” to the emperor of Japan.
